The Big 12 Conference is an American athletic conference in the collegiate level consisting of ten schools in the Central United States. The Big 12 Conference is a member of the NCAA Division 1 in all sports categories. Members of the Big 12 are located in the states of Iowa, Missouri, Texas, Kansas, and Oklahoma.
The Big 12 Conference was formed on February 25, 1994 when the members of the Big Eight Conference combined with four Texas schools of the Southwest Conference. The games in the new conference began in 1996. Due to the 2010-2011 NCAA Conference realignment, the Big 12 lost two of its member schools to other conferences thus the divisional format in the conference ceased. However, they still retained the "Big 12" name even if they had ten teams remaining.
Before the NCAA realignment, the format for the Big 12 basketball games was two games against divisional rivals and one game against the other division for a total of 16 conference games. The new game format to be adopted would now be an 18-game double round robin.
The present member-schools of the Big 12 Conference are the following: Baylor University, Iowa State University, University of Kansas, Kansas State University, University of Oklahoma, Oklahoma State University, University of Texas, Texas Tech University, Texas Christian University, and West Virginia University (tentative).
