The Southeastern Conference (SEC) is an organization of twelve member-schools from the southeastern United States. The headquarters of the SEC is located at Birmingham, Alabama and is one of the more financially successful conferences, consistently in the lead when it comes to revenue distribution to its members. The Southeastern Conference basketball teams are NCAA Division 1 teams that compete against each other.
The Southeastern Conference basketball structure was similar to the football teams being divided into two divisions. However, beginning in 2011 the division format was abandoned and the top four teams automatically receive first-round byes. This is to be in tune with the women's basketball that has used the single league format for a long time already.
The SEC Men's Basketball Tournament is commonly referred to as the SEC Tournament; the format of the game is a single round robin with the top four teams receiving first-round byes. The winner automatically qualifies for the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament. The Southeastern Conference is set to include two new schools in the 2012 season namely, Texas A&M University and University of Missouri bringing the total number of schools to 14. Expect fiercer games this season as more teams vie for the right to represent the SEC in the NCAA tournament.
